Katie McCann graduated Summa cum Laude from Butler University’s Dance Department with a Bachelor of Science in Arts Administration. After graduation, she danced with Kentucky Ballet Theatre in Lexington, Kentucky where she performed soloist roles in various traditional ballets and repertory works. She was a freelance dancer in Chicago for more than a decade.
For more than 15 years, Katie has been teaching classical ballet, pointe, and repertory classes to all ages and ability levels. She has taught professional company classes for Inaside Dance Chicago, Nomi Dance, and Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre. Her students have gone on to prestigious college programs and professional careers in the ballet, modern, and the commercial dance industries.
Katie believes strong classical technique is the basis for strong bodies in other dance genres. She also believes ballet, when taught safely and correctly, can be fun and inspiring despite the rigor required to get better at it. She is also a licensed Progressing Ballet Technique© instructor.
Katie is the founding director of Dance in the Parks, a non-profit performance company that brings free, professional, outdoor, concert-dance performances to neighborhood parks, danceintheparks.org. Several of her former students have been hired as apprentices and company dancers. Her goal as a teacher is to train dancers to be professionals she would hire (in and out of the studio): technically strong in many styles of dance, responsible, quick, team players, and pleasant to have in the room.
